The
patent-pending EZ-Anesthesia system
is designed for the anesthesia of
small laboratory animals ranging
in size from neonates up to animals
weighing 5 kilograms. The system
is a portable unit that has
been designed for maximum efficiency,
ease of use and low anesthetic gas
consumption.
The system delivers
a precisely blended mixture of oxygen and Isoflurane through a lid unit that covers the
polycarbonate host cage. The lid includes an
activated charcoal air filter canister that
releases safe, filtered air back into the room. A
water-heated cage warmer helps retains animal body
temperature while in the host cage.
After initial
anesthetizing induction in the host cage, the
animal can be moved to the breathing device and
heated surgical tray. Nosecones are custom
designed for a range of small animals and are
available in three sizes to assure a snug fit with
no dead space and no CO2 buildup. A highly
sensitive duck valve is regulated by the animal’s
breathing and works in conjunction with the
nosecone to assure non-rebreathing efficiency.
The system allows
safe, controlled anesthesia for long surgeries
over a period of hours. The breathing device also
incorporates an air filter that releases safe,
filtered air back into the room. The gas delivery
system can supply anesthesia agent to
multiple breathing device
units, allowing procedures to be performed
simultaneously on several animals.
The breathing
device/surgical bed unit also includes a small
soft chamber for anesthetizing a few animals or
for holding previously anesthetized animals near
the surgical bed. This soft chamber can
accommodate up to five mice, keeping them near the
surgical bed in an anesthetized condition. This is
a convenient alternative to the host cage unit,
when only a few animals need to be treated. |
